Is earwax removal always necessary? Not always. Many people never need their ears cleaned professionally. However, if wax build-up is causing symptoms or obstructing the view of the eardrum (for example, before a hearing test), removal is recommended.
-
When should I avoid micro-suction or curettage? While micro-suction is very safe, it may not be appropriate if you: Have ongoing ear infections, Have had recent ear surgery, Have a perforated eardrum, or Are experiencing severe pain, vertigo, or fluid discharge. In these cases, we may refer you to a GP or ENT specialist first.
-
What should I expect during my appointment? At Swan Earwax Removal, your appointment will be safe, thorough, and comfortable: Consultation – We'll discuss your symptoms, relevant history, and any concerns. Ear Examination – We’ll use a video otoscope to show you the condition of your ears. Wax Removal – If wax is present and it’s safe to proceed, we’ll use micro-suction, curettage, or both to gently remove it. Review – We recheck your ears after cleaning and discuss any findings or recommendations. Appointments usually take 15–20 minutes, and many people feel instant relief and clearer hearing afterward.
-
What is earwax and why do we have it?Earwax (or cerumen) is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It helps protect your ears by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms, preventing them from reaching the eardrum. It also has lubricating and antibacterial properties. Most of the time, it moves out of the ear naturally, but sometimes it can build up and cause blockage or discomfort.
-
Should I use wax softener before the appointment? We recommend that you do not use wax softeners before your appointment unless advised by a medical professional. Wax softeners can turn the wax into a sticky or runny texture, which can make removal harder and may coat the eardrum, reducing visibility. During your appointment, we’ll first assess your ears and use wax softening techniques if necessary, based on what we see.
-
Should I get my ears cleaned if I have pain or an ear infection? If your ear is painful, discharging fluid, or you suspect an ear infection, we recommend you see a GP first. Micro-suction may still be possible after medical assessment, but inflamed or infected ears may require antibiotics or other treatment before proceeding.
-
Who will perform the micro-suction?Your procedure will be performed by Dr Raza Hashimi, an experienced audiologist with over 17 years of clinical experience in ear care and hearing health. He has successfully helped thousands of clients with gentle and effective wax removal techniques, ensuring your comfort and safety.
-
How do I know if I have too much earwax?Signs of earwax build-up may include: Reduced hearing A blocked or full feeling in the ear Earache or discomfort Ringing or buzzing (tinnitus) Dizziness or imbalance Itchiness or mild discharge If you're experiencing these symptoms, it’s best to have your ears examined by a professional.
-
What if no wax is found in my ears?If no wax is found and cleaning is not required, a consultation-only fee applies: Standard: $60 Pensioner: $50 This includes video otoscopy, advice, and a discussion of your symptoms.
-
What methods are used to remove earwax? We use micro-suction (a gentle vacuum technique) and/or manual curettage (using specialised tools to lift wax out). These are safe, precise, and well-tolerated. No water is used, unlike traditional syringing or irrigation methods.
-
What if my ears could not be fully cleaned in one visit? In some cases, especially when wax is very deep, sticky, or impacted, a follow-up appointment may be needed. Follow-up fees are: In-clinic: $70 (standard) or $60 (pensioner) You’ll be advised if a return visit is necessary and given guidance on how to prepare.
-
Does Medicare cover the procedure fee (in part or full)? No, Medicare does not currently cover earwax removal by audiologists in private practice.
-
What is the cost of the procedure? Our pricing is: In-clinic standard: $110 In-clinic pensioner: $90 Home visit: $150 (no pensioner discount) For full details, please visit our Fees page.
-
Do you remove foreign objects from ears?Yes, we can remove certain foreign objects from the ear canal using specialised tools and techniques. It’s not uncommon, especially with young children, to find small items like beads, toy parts, or bits of cotton swabs in the ears. For older children and adults, removal is usually straightforward if it's safe to do so. For younger children, we will first assess the situation. If the child is calm and the object can be removed safely, we will proceed. If removal is not safe—for example, if the object is deep, the child is uncooperative, or there is risk of injury—we will refer you to an ENT specialist or emergency department for appropriate care.
-
How can I pay for my appointment? We accept cash, EFTPOS, Visa, and Mastercard. Online bookings require full payment at the time of booking. This helps us reduce no-shows and ensure appointment slots are used efficiently. If you require an invoice for private health claims, just let us know.
